Un moule en silicone est réalisé à l'aide d'un prototype qui sert de base au processus de duplication de la pièce originale. Grâce à la flexibilité du silicone, des géométries complexes entremêlées peuvent être réalisées sans problèmes de démoulage. Le matériau de base utilisé pour les reproductions est une résine polyuréthane liquide qui, grâce à l'utilisation d'additifs, peut simuler les propriétés d'une grande variété de plastiques. Entre 15 et 30 pièces peuvent être produites selon les exigences du matériau et de l'état de surface. Cette méthode est idéale pour la production de petits lots et de prototypes dans lesquels la production d'outils de moulage par injection coûteux n'est pas réalisable.
